R-134a Refrigerant — Automotive & HVAC, Free Nationwide Shipping

R-134a (HFC-134a) is the refrigerant used in virtually every car, truck, and SUV manufactured between 1994 and 2021, as well as many light commercial refrigeration and HVAC applications. If you're servicing automotive AC systems, walk-in coolers, refrigerated transport, or older commercial equipment — R-134a is what you need. Refrigerant Inc stocks genuine, virgin R-134a with free shipping to all 48 continental states.

What Systems Use R-134a?

R-134a replaced R-12 as the automotive refrigerant standard starting in 1994 following the R12 phaseout. It remains in use in:

  • Automotive AC — Cars, trucks, SUVs, and light commercial vehicles manufactured between 1994 and approximately 2021
  • Refrigerated transport — Reefer trailers and refrigerated vans
  • Commercial refrigeration — Some medium-temperature display cases and reach-in coolers
  • Residential/light commercial HVAC — Certain older systems and specialty equipment

If the vehicle or equipment nameplate, service sticker, or service port label says R-134a or HFC-134a, this is your refrigerant.

R134a vs R1234yf — What's the Difference?

R1234yf is the newer refrigerant required in vehicles manufactured after approximately 2021 under EPA and SAE standards. The two are not interchangeable — using the wrong refrigerant in a vehicle AC system will damage the compressor and void any warranty. Check your vehicle's underhood service label to confirm which refrigerant it uses before purchasing.

We carry both — if your vehicle uses R1234yf, see our R1234yf page here.

Shipping Information

R134a ships via ground freight to all 48 continental states. Alaska and Hawaii excluded. Most orders ship within 1 business day. Transit time is typically 2–5 business days depending on location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is R134a still available?
Yes. R134a is not banned and remains widely available. While new vehicles are transitioning to R1234yf, the enormous installed base of R134a vehicles will require servicing for many years.

Can I use R134a in my newer car?
Only if your vehicle is rated for R134a. Vehicles manufactured after approximately 2021 typically require R1234yf. Check the underhood service label — it will clearly state which refrigerant to use. Using the wrong refrigerant can damage compressor seals and oil.

How much R134a does a car need?
Most passenger vehicles hold between 1.5 and 3 lbs of R134a. The exact amount is on the underhood service label. A full system evacuation and recharge typically uses 1–2 lbs depending on system size and how much was lost.

What's the difference between R134a and R12?
R12 (Freon 12) was the automotive refrigerant standard prior to 1994. It was phased out due to ozone depletion. R134a was its replacement — the two are not interchangeable without a retrofit conversion kit.

Do I need EPA certification to buy R134a?
R134a in containers over 2 lbs requires EPA Section 609 certification for automotive use. For HVAC applications, Section 608 applies. Proper recovery is required — venting is illegal under EPA regulations.
