R1234yf Refrigerant — Honeywell Solstice, Free Nationwide Shipping
R-1234yf (HFO-1234yf) is the refrigerant required in virtually all new vehicles manufactured in the United States after 2021, replacing R134a under EPA and SAE MAC standards. It's also used in many European vehicles going back to 2013. If you're an automotive technician, fleet service shop, or dealership servicing late-model vehicles — R1234yf is what your customers' cars need. Refrigerant Inc carries Honeywell Solstice YF, the leading brand, with free shipping to all 48 continental states.
What Vehicles Use R1234yf?
- 2021 and newer vehicles — Virtually all domestic and imported passenger cars, trucks, and SUVs
- 2013–2020 vehicles — Many European makes (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, VW, Volvo) transitioned earlier
- Some 2017–2020 domestic vehicles — Several GM, Ford, and Chrysler models switched ahead of the full mandate
Always verify by checking the underhood AC service label. It will clearly state R-1234yf if that's what the system requires. Do not use R134a in an R1234yf system — the two use different service ports (to prevent cross-contamination) and different compressor oils.
Why R1234yf Costs More Than R134a
R1234yf has a global warming potential (GWP) of just 4, compared to R134a's GWP of 1,430. That makes it dramatically more climate-friendly. The tradeoff is cost — R1234yf is more expensive to produce and is manufactured by a small number of suppliers (primarily Honeywell and Chemours). Prices have come down from their early highs but remain significantly above R134a. We offer competitive pricing with no freight markup.

R1234yf Service Equipment Note
R1234yf requires dedicated recovery/recycling/recharge equipment — you cannot use standard R134a AC machines. SAE J2843-certified equipment is required. The service ports are also a different size to prevent accidental cross-fill. If your shop is still running R134a equipment only, you'll need to invest in R1234yf-compatible machines as late-model vehicles become an increasing share of your service volume.
Shipping Information
R1234yf ships via ground freight to all 48 continental states. Alaska and Hawaii excluded. Most orders ship within 1 business day. Transit time is typically 2–5 business days depending on location.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is R1234yf the same as R134a?
No. They are different refrigerants with different chemical compositions, GWP ratings, service ports, and compressor oil requirements. They are not interchangeable. Always confirm which refrigerant your vehicle requires before purchasing.
Why is R1234yf so expensive?
R1234yf is produced by a small number of manufacturers and involves a more complex production process than R134a. Prices have declined from early peaks as production has scaled, but it remains more expensive than legacy refrigerants. We offer competitive pricing and no freight markup.
Can I retrofit my R134a car to use R1234yf?
Generally not recommended or practical. The systems are designed for specific refrigerants. If your vehicle uses R134a, use R134a. If it was manufactured for R1234yf, use R1234yf.
Do I need certification to buy R1234yf?
EPA Section 609 certification is required for automotive refrigerant purchase in containers over 2 lbs. Proper recovery equipment is required — venting R1234yf is illegal.
What's the shelf life of R1234yf?
Properly stored in a sealed cylinder at room temperature, R1234yf has an indefinite shelf life. Store away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
