R507 Refrigerant (R507A) — Low-Temperature Commercial Refrigeration, Free Nationwide Shipping

R-507 (officially designated R507A by ASHRAE) is a 50/50 azeotropic blend of R125 and R143a, widely used in low-temperature commercial refrigeration applications. It has long been a preferred refrigerant for supermarket frozen food systems, blast freezers, cold storage warehouses, and transport refrigeration where consistently low temperatures are required. Refrigerant Inc stocks genuine, virgin R507 with free shipping to all 48 continental states.

What Systems Use R507 (R507A)?

R507 is purpose-built for low-temperature refrigeration. Common applications include:

  • Supermarket frozen food cases — Low-temp display cases and reach-in freezer sections
  • Blast freezers and blast chillers — Food processing and food service operations
  • Cold storage warehouses — Large-scale frozen storage facilities operating at -20°F and below
  • Transport refrigeration — Reefer trailers and refrigerated containers requiring deep-freeze temperatures
  • Ice rinks and ice production — Commercial ice-making and skating rink refrigeration systems
  • Industrial refrigeration — Low-temperature process cooling applications

R507 is typically used in systems requiring evaporating temperatures below -20°F. For medium-temperature applications (0°F to 45°F), R404A or its lower-GWP replacements are more commonly specified.

R507 vs. R404A — Key Differences

R507 and R404A are closely related refrigerants and are often used interchangeably in commercial refrigeration systems. The key differences:

  • Temperature range: R507 is optimized for lower temperatures — it outperforms R404A in deep-freeze applications below -20°F. R404A is more versatile across both medium and low temperatures.
  • Azeotropic blend: R507 is an azeotrope — its components boil and condense at the same temperature, meaning it behaves like a single-component refrigerant and does not fractionate. This simplifies recovery and recharge procedures.
  • GWP: R507 has a GWP of approximately 3,985 — slightly higher than R404A's 3,922. Both are high-GWP refrigerants subject to EPA AIM Act phasedown regulations.
  • Performance: In low-temp applications, R507 typically delivers slightly higher capacity than R404A due to its azeotropic nature and thermodynamic properties.

R507 Phasedown — What You Need to Know

R507 has one of the highest GWPs of any commonly used refrigerant at approximately 3,985. Like R404A, it is subject to EPA AIM Act HFC phasedown regulations. New equipment using R507 is being phased out in favor of lower-GWP alternatives. However, R507 refrigerant remains fully legal to purchase and use for servicing existing equipment — and the installed base of R507 commercial refrigeration systems is large and will require ongoing service for years to come.

R507 Alternatives (Lower-GWP Replacements)

If you're planning a retrofit of an existing R507 system or specifying refrigerant for new equipment, we also carry the leading low-GWP alternatives:

  • R448A (Solstice N40) — Leading low-GWP replacement for R507 and R404A, particularly strong in low-temperature applications
  • R449A (XP40) — Another leading R507/R404A replacement, widely used in supermarket and cold storage retrofits
  • RS-50 (R442A) — R-404
  • ⚠️ California & New York Shipping Restriction R-507 cannot be shipped to California or New York addresses per state environmental regulations. Learn more
